Our Mission

The place in which Old Harbor Outfitters sits is a unique one. First and foremost we are fisherman.  We are drawn to the sea for its unexpected adventures.  The zing of the line, the jump of a sailfish, the fight of a bigeye tuna.  We’ve spent countless days and nights pitching and rolling through sun and storms.    We’ve watched the water temperature and currents change season to season, and our runs have lead us further and further off shore with each passing year.  We could not help but notice the decline in our quarry, and we fear that our sons and daughters will not be able to enjoy the ocean as we have.

We are businessmen.  We’ve taken what we love and made it our livelihood.  Old Harbor Outfitters isn’t simply just another fishing clothing company. We take the time and make the effort to not only provide clothes and gear using the latest technology, but we also work hard to create a business that our customers can be proud. We have created Ocean TRAC to do just that, to go beyond the standard role of business as benefactor and make OHO an active partner in conservation projects around the world.

The thresher shark is the symbol of our company, the animal from which we derive our identity.  Like the shark’s distinctive adaptation – its long, whiplike tail that allows it to strike fish– we at OHO have created innovative gear that is specifically adapted to the needs of fishermen.  Though the thresher is our inspiration and even forms our logo, little is known about the species. Popular with both commercial and sport fishermen, its populations are thought to be in decline.

Because of its priority for research and conservation, the thresher shark is the focus of our first ever campaign.  Beginning this year, OHO will team up with researchers from programs such as The Massachusetts Shark Research Program (MSRP), the University of New Hampshire Large Pelagics Research Center, and the National Marine Fisheries Service Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.  These pelagic fish biologists are at the cutting edge of scientific research for satellite tag usage.
